Hijacked bus in Manila
23/08/02010
Police in the Philippines have boarded a hijacked bus and begun to rescue hostages in what appears to be the end of a day-long siege. TV images showed hostages, mostly Chinese tourists, leaving the vehicle. However, at least one body could be seen at the front of the bus. It is not yet clear what has happened to the gunman, a former policeman who seized the bus early on Monday morning.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11055015

Sarah's Law
01/08/02010
Police doubt 'Sarah's Law' will cause vigilante attacks.....Police have played down fears that allowing parents to check if someone with access to their children is a sex offender may cause vigilante attacks. The scheme known as "Sarah's Law" was proposed after the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne 10 years ago. The Home Office pilot scheme is now being extended to eight more forces.

Chandlers update
30/07/02010
Paul & Rachel Chandler update.....Its been over 60 days since news was last released. Sadly, the Chandlers are still being held captive by the Somali pirates with no indication as to when they may be released. They have been in captivity for 280 days to date.
While we continue to remain focused on helping Paul and Rachel obtain their freedom, we are also concerned about the overall piracy activity in the region. Since insurance companies usually settle these cases without much media involvement, the public is unaware of how rampant this situation has become.

Somali crackdown threatens city ransom role.....The United Nations plans for sanctions on two suspected pirates would hit the often lucrative work of the law firms, insurers and private security companies in London that quietly arrange ransoms to free kidnapped ships and crews. Two UK-flagged vessels – the Asian Glory and the St James Park – were released this year, while pirates are still holding the British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler after kidnapping them from their yacht near the Seychelles in October.

Foreigners held in Africa
30/07/02010
Foreigners held in Africa.....26 Jul 2010 09(Reuters) - President Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed on Monday that Michel Germaneau, the 78-year-old French hostage held by Al Qaeda's North African wing, was dead. [ID:nLDE66P0BL]
AQIM claimed responsibility on May 14 for kidnapping Germaneau.

Here are some details about recent kidnappings of foreigners in Africa:

* MAURITANIA:
November 2009 - Spaniards Albert Vilalta and Roque Pascual, disappeared on Nov. 29 from a convoy run by a Barcelona-based humanitarian aid organisation. A third Spaniard kidnapped at the same time, Alicia Gamez, was released in March.
* SOMALIA:
April 2008 - A Briton and a Kenyan working on a U.N.-funded project were seized by gunmen and taken to Jilib, 280 km (175 miles) south of Mogadishu. They are still being held.
July 2009 - Somali gunmen kidnapped two French security advisers working for the government from a hotel in Mogadishu on July 14. Police said one escaped on Aug. 26 after killing three of his captors, but Marc Aubriere denied killing anyone and said he slipped away while his guards slept.
-- On June 9, 2010 a video appeared on a website used by Islamist groups, which said the hostage, Denis Allex, had issued a "message to the French people". The video showed him in an orange outfit with armed men standing behind him.
Oct. 2009 - Paul and Rachel Chandler, a retired British couple, were seized by pirates in the Indian Ocean aboard their yacht soon after they left the Seychelles.
* PIRACY:
-- Pirates are now holding at least 17 vessels - the latest ship taken and still being held is the Marshall Islands flagged ship, seized on July 4.

Tanker hijacked in Red Sea
05/07/02010

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Pirates have hijacked a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker in the Red Sea, the European Union Naval Force said on Monday. The 13,065 deadweight tonnes tanker Motivator, manned by 18 Filipino crew and carrying lubricating oil, was attacked early on Sunday morning. "The MT Motivator reported it was under small arms fire from a pirate attack in the northern Bab Al Mandeb area in the southern Red Sea," EUNAVFOR said. "After notification of this attack, attempts were made to make contact with the Motivator but to no avail. The hijack was confirmed early on July 5."

Somali pirates flee with Chandler's
28/04/02010
Paul & Rachel Chandler....The Somali pirate gang who have been holding a British couple hostage since October fled with their captives yesterday after militants linked to al-Qaida took over their territory. Paul and Rachel Chandler, who are both in their 50s, were bundled into a car yesterday when al-Shabaab insurgents moved into the pirate stronghold of Harardhere in the coastal region of north Somalia. The Islamic group usually operates in southern and central Somalia but has shifted north in a possible attempt to crack down on piracy. If al-Shabaab militants take control of the pirate strongholds, the 300-plus foreign hostages could be in even greater danger.
